The Fête de la Musique in Kyoto, 100-Trumpet Ensemble, on June 21st, as part of Kiyomizu world philanthropic project

Jun 21, 2018

The Fête de la Musique is a musical fete, which was originally established in Paris in 1982 and has continued to expand across the world. Today, multiple events related to this international music festival take place worldwide, in 120 countries and 800 cities on the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. This year, an extraordinary concert featuring brass, called 100-Trumpet Ensemble, will be held in the Kiyomizu-dera Temple's compound in Kyoto, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the sister-city affiliation between Paris and Kyoto.
In the square beneath the temple's Sai-mon (West gate), 100 trumpet players will gather, playing a wide range of music such as opera masterpieces like Aida and Carmen, French chansons, Japanese nursery songs and ballet music. With varied and vibrant sounds, Kiyomizu would like to express its philanthropic spirits to the rest of the world.

The concert performed in the temple's grounds will be broadcast live on the Kiyomizu-dera Temple's official Facebook page as well as Facebook Live and shared with the viewers all over the world.

The celebration of the birth of the Buddha, called Gotan-e, will be held on April 8th, which is recognized as the birthday of the Buddha. A small shrine decorated with flowers, called Hanami-do, is set in the west side of the Main Hall. Priests and visitors hold a celebration by sprinkling sweet tea on the Buddhist image placed in the center of the shrine. Visitors are provided with sweet tea after the observance. We would be grateful if you join in this celebration and offer your prayers.

Water Memorial Day Ceremony is held on April 3rd

Water Memorial Day Ceremony is held on April 3rd

Apr 03, 2018

The ALL KIYOMIZUDERA SEISUIJI Network, which was organized by all the temples throughout Japan baring the name "Kiyomizu" or "Seisui" (both are different pronunciations of the same kanji characters 清水), established the 3rd day of April as Water Memorial Day. Every year since 1998, the organization has held a joint ceremony in Kiyomizu-dera Temple's Main Hall, praying for the purification of people's minds and our living environments, as well as giving thanks for the blessing of water.
Priests from different sects chant their sutras in unison while offering votive water to visitors and asking for donations in support of a well drilling campaign in India.
In the east side of the Main Hall, Banshu-Kiyomizu-dera will perform Mitake-daiko drumming as a religious offering and the Kiyomizu-dera Temple Community will stage a spectacular parade known as Seiyu-e. On this year's Water Memorial Day, feel grateful for the value of water and consider the people suffering from water shortages elsewhere in the world.
